Is your company prepared for the challenges of winter? With our tips in the checklist below, we ensure that your prevention plan has the right start to get through the cold winter months.
An up-to-date winter prevention plan has several advantages:
- Reducing workplace accidents.
- Preventing accidents with customers.
- Ensuring service continuity.
- Cost savings through prevention.
Eight winter safety tips from Michaël:
1. Snow and ice removal strategy: ensure snow clearing at entrances and parking areas. Who will be responsible for this, and when will the procedure take effect?
2. Fire policy guidelines: review your rules regarding the use of candles, fireplaces, and open flames. Create an emergency plan in case things go wrong. Review whether all employees have received the necessary and mandatory training.
3. Safety equipment stock: ensure you have flashlights, batteries, and safety vests. Do you have a supply of salt for de-icing or a snow shovel?
4. First aid training: ensure refresher courses in first aid with specific attention to winter injuries such as slip-and-fall injuries or fractures.
5. Inspection and maintenance: check fire and smoke detectors, heating systems, and ensure operational emergency generators at the necessary intervals. Also, pay attention to temporary winter structures for events and additional insulation for pipes or outdoor faucets.
7. Update emergency contact lists and communication lines.: Especially during staff changes, we sometimes forget to keep contact information up to date. If everything is correct, then determine who should be contacted and when. A clear framework is essential!
8. Schedule a prevention session with your staff: is your plan up-to-date? Then schedule a session with all employees to go through the details. Preventive work is half the battle won.
